US of A

(*) José Pegado

There was history in the air and in the heart of millions as the world, fascinated by the pomp and circumstance that protocol and traditions demand, followed the first negro being inaugurated as the 44th President of the USA.

A one and a half million crowd of voluntaries of all skins colours and origins stood there on Washington Mall and along the roads leading to the Capital and patiently waited, in the sunny but cold morning hours, making sure that they were part of the event.

When the time was right Obama raised and formally sworn in as the President of the U.S.A. and all will remember the emotional difficulty he had in voicing hid pledge only to, a few minutes later, be able to deliver a fantastically well structured and heartfelt inauguration speech to a nation that after several crises (unfinished wars and financial systems scandals and threat of unemployment) seeks unity and will certainly work for renewal of the old values

He spoke like a priest-general and his message might well have been inspired by whispers all the way from George Washington to Martin Luther King.

The message might also be addressed to countries in Europe where changes should be considered

Professional commentators in Europe have already said that his administration will not be able to solve the inherited problems (economic recovery, unemployment and war situations in Iraq and Afghanistan) but they see things the European way.

They do not know that in time of crises America has the ability to define goals and mobilize the will and strength of all its people and act.

There are lessons to be learned by people and politicians around the globe.
